It’s hard to believe that even before a single tooth appears in a child’s mouth, there are things that parents need to know about dental care. It is never too early to bring your baby along on your visit to the dentist. The child’s progress can quickly be assessed and he/she will become comfortable in a dental setting before they may need treatment.

It is usually recommended that an infant visit the dentist six months after the first tooth is visible or at one year if that is sooner. “Baby teeth” or primary teeth, the front ones, are used by the child for about 5-7 years before they are replaced by permanent teeth. Primary molar teeth, toward the back of the month, are used until about 11-13 years of age. Over those years, they serve many important functions. Teeth, “baby” or “adult” are important for chewing, speaking, supporting facial features, and smiling-an important part of social interactions. Primary teeth have the additional job of holding space so the permanent teeth can have room to erupt.

Important preventive care can take place even before that. So what should you know about caring for your new baby’s mouth. In the early months use a damp washcloth or piece of gauze to gently rub your infant’s gums. This will clean the formula/breast milk residue and help establish the routine of daily oral care. Continue using the damp washcloth or gauze as the baby is teething. Your dentist and/or dental hygienist will then guide you on the transition to using a toothbrush.

Equally important is to establish good eating habits. Never put sugary drinks such as sodas, Kool-aid, or tea in baby’s bottle. Use the bottle only for formula, milk, or water. Never put your baby to bed with a bottle of anything other than water. Your baby can begin drinking from a cup at age 6-8 months. Fruit juices should be real juice (100% juice on the label), not juice beverages, such as Hawaiian Punch or Hi-C. Overall juice consumption should be limited to 4oz per day and preferably at mealtime.
The frequency of visits to the dentist for your child will be determined by your dentist and dental hygienist. This will be based on such factors as home care, diet, fluoride availability and use, and history of decay.

Early care will affect life-long habits of dental care and contribute to your child’s overall good health.

If you happen to have read or watched any tabloid news lately, you probably heard this statement attributed to Demi Moore. Ms. Moore is in the news for recently being hospitalized for “exhaustion” following a high profile divorce. Those of us who have seen photos almost continuously over the last few years of the 40-something starlet, find ourselves responding “really?” One of the clearly most beautiful Hollywood stars, it is a statement difficult for us to wrap our heads around.

So I began to ponder this thought. And really, I suppose most of us CAN relate. There are the days when we roll out of bed and somehow over the night, the “zit fairy” payed a visit, our hair is frizzy from the day before when we were caught in the rain, and the scales tell us that we ate too much over the last few days. Maybe it would be best to just crawl back in bed and hide under the covers. On the other hand-there are days when things seem to miraculously fall in place, good hair days, the perfect outfit, skin glowing from a weekend in the sun and the person looking back at us in the mirror is more than okay.

So what is this thing called “self image” and how realistic is it after all? Most of us know what things we like about our appearance/body and likewise those things that we don’t. Important in this process is determining what things we can change and what things we must accept and even embrace i.e. our height.

One of the most important features of our appearance is our teeth. Thankfully, technological advances in the last years have made it possible to make major changes in the appearance of our teeth in a short period of time with little to no discomfort. Lives are transformed because real or perceived flaws are erased and replaced with movie star smiles.

What a wonderful business to be in-one that not only helps folks to maintain good overall health but also makes them want to smile!

That has occurred in a number of venues: Southwest Virginia, New Orleans, Haiti, and right here in our own community. On some of those occasions we have offered our office for projects in collaboration with the local Free Clinic and social service agencies. We have multiple treatment rooms that allow for many patients to be seen in a short time frame and a large staff united in this effort.

This past Saturday we once again worked with the Free Clinic and the local Dental Hygiene Organization to provide cleanings to patients who were on a long waiting list for care. With the help of our dentists, hygienists, staff and along with volunteer hygienists and dentists from throughout the area, we were able to provide prophylactic treatment to over 70 members of our community. The Free Clinic serves low income and working uninsured adults and their families. These are folks who value good dental care but simply do not have resources to do it on their own. By providing preventive treatment, the risk for future dental problems is diminished and their overall health is improved.

Our staff was very struck by the gratitude of those receiving the care. But let’s be clear. They were also grateful to have served. We were reminded of the adage, “you always get back more than you give”. Although it was a long and physically demanding day, everyone left the office feeling a “good tired”. There is no greater gift than to know that you have truly been of service and hopefully made a difference.

We really try to incorporate this sense of service into everything we do with our own patients on a daily basis. While in theory we are a business, we are after all, in the business of serving.

Today’s children are living in a fast-paced technology dominated world. Incorporating this into your child’s dental care is a way to encourage them to brush. Electric toothbrushes are easier to use and require less effort on the part of the child. Why not gift them with an electric toothbrush bearing one of their favorite characters like Cinderella or Elmo. Make it fun by turning brushing into a game. Many parents find that using a timer insures that they do more than simply stick the toothbrush in their mouth when reminded to brush. Even better, brush your teeth together. Modeling good dental habits is the best way to encourage them to care for their own teeth. It also makes it less of a chore to have company while they are brushing!

Finally, schedule regular checkups for the entire family. Again you are modeling good habits and making a statement that this is important to everyone. You are also making it a family outing, an “event” where everyone participates. If these visits occur regularly before dental work is needed, the child will already feel comfortable in the setting. Your dentist will be a friendly face.

Remember, the family that brushes together, smiles together!

At Charlottesville Dental Health Partners, we wanted to be sure and say thank you to our patients. Our patients come from all walks of life and many geographical locations. Many of them have been with us for over 30 years and most came to us because someone else suggested us as a good dental home. They bring to us a wide variety of experiences, expertise, and interests. They share their journeys with us-the birth of a grandchild, the death of a parent, their child’s first day at school, the book they just wrote, the trip they took. We marvel at their resilience, their determination, and their giftedness. They enrich our lives, lift us up, and most of all they entrust their dental health care to us. We are grateful this Thanksgiving that they have chosen to be a part of our dental family and we wish each and everyone a joyful celebration.

Interestingly, only you can answer that. Beauty is a very subjective concept and this also applies to your smile. That is why developing a relationship with your dentist and the dental team is so important to achieving the outcome that you desire. This can only happen in an atmosphere that is unrushed and comfortable. The dental team needs time to get to know you and your goals for your smile makeover. They also need experience and advanced training in dental aesthetics to successfully guide you in making good choices.

One size does not fit all. Each patient’s treatment should be individualized. You are unique with your own facial structure, skin, and eyes. There are many issues that can affect the appearance of your smile: disease, nutrition, occlusion (your bite), injury, personal habits, and of course your genetic makeup. Your dentist should take all of these factors into consideration as he helps you develop a plan.

In order for you to best understand your options, your dentist should also have technology that aids you in understanding and visualizing the enhancements that are possible. Your dentist will then offer alternatives and choices for reaching the course of treatment that will best achieve the look you desire and also provide long-term results. Together you make the final decision.

As a service to our patients and the children of our community, we are offering free dental care kits to anyone who stops by with their parents on the three days following Halloween (Nov. 1-3). Just stop by our office at 3025 Berkmar Drive (lower level) during business hours 8AM-5PM and say the magic words “Trick or Treat” to one of our receptionists. Have a Happy and Safe Halloween!

You’ve probably heard someone talk about whitening their teeth. With the interest in cosmetic procedures growing, one of the first avenues people will explore is whitening their teeth. Many brides and grooms are putting it on their “to do’ list before the big day. Television personalities and politicians consider it a professional “must do”. You may have also heard someone else state that “whitening your teeth destroys enamel”. So what are the facts? Is it safe?

Study after study by the American Dental Association has shown that there is no damage to teeth resulting from the use of whitening products. There is no difference regardless of the method of whitening that is used. In-office whitening, which involves a gel application in conjunction with a plasma light is both safe and effective. Trays with whitening gel administered at home are also effective. Additionally they are useful in maintaining the results of the in-house procedure. You may choose to use either one or both. Regardless, they are all safe. Over-the-counter products are also safe, but usually are less effective than professional products.

Many of our patients have transformed their smiles using these products.

Keep Smiling!
